West Park Equalization Facility Phase II is Taking Shape

The West Park Equalization Facility Phase II Project is taking shape within one of Nashville’s most transformative neighborhoods, the Nations.

Construction of a new, circular-shaped 260-foot diameter, 21 million gallon wet weather storage tank increases the capacity of wastewater storage during wet weather events. The new storage tank will be utilized when sewer flows exceed the capacity of the existing West Park Pump Station. It stores peak flows until flows in the sewer system recede and the stored volume can be conveyed through the pump station to treatment. The expanded storage capacity will reduce sanitary sewer overflows into Richland Creek.

Construction of the storage tank’s concrete walls continues, and crews are currently completing the tank’s roof. Given the size of the project and its location within a park, care is being taken to minimize the visual impact. The design includes a natural fence consisting of bamboo planted around the perimeter of the tank and bedding improvements to limit the spread of the bamboo shoots. To enhance the aesthetics of the project and complement the bamboo, the Program worked with Council Member Mary Carolyn Roberts to select a mural consisting of trees and sky to be painted on the tank’s exterior walls.

The project, conducted in collaboration with the Metro Parks Department, will also improve amenities and recreation options at West Park. Park improvements include a new adult softball field, a new basketball court, a 6,000-square foot youth playground, generous open spaces, and a 12-foot- wide perimeter greenway trail for walking, running, and biking. A new picnic pavilion, including restrooms, is also being built.

The storage tank and park improvements are scheduled to be complete in the fall of 2017.
