Blasting FAQs – Central Upgrade Project
+Why is blasting necessary?
To construct the new Headworks building at 3rd Avenue N and Garfield it is necessary to removal rock to a depth of about 35’. Blasting is the most efficient way to complete this task and can be safely performed without risk to health or property.
+When will blasting occur?
Blasting and rock removal will occur in September and October. A series of small blasts will be scheduled during weekdays at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm.
+What should I expect during the blasting?
The benefit of frequent blasts is that they can be small to minimize the force of the blast and allow rock removal to occur between blasts. The blasts will feel like a temporary rumble throughout the area.
+How will I know when blasts will occur?
Blasts are always preceded and followed by horn signals. There will be a series of horns starting five minutes before each blast. After the blast has occurred, a single horn signal indicates the All Clear sign.
+Will traffic be impacted?
Traffic on 3rd Avenue at Garfield will be stopped for a couple of minutes during the time of blasts.
+Will I suffer property damage due to blasting?
With the frequent small, low energy blasts there is minimal chance property damage will occur. Blasts will be monitored to ensure that the amount of energy released remains within specified limits. To ensure that local property conditions are known before blasting work begins, a pre-blast survey was conducted on properties within 700’ feet of 3rd Avenue and Garfield consisting of documenting and photographic each property.
